Margret Dale Thomas, nee Karl, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1922. Her family moved to Southern California in the 1930s. She attended Pasadena Junior College and the University of California at Los Angeles. She worked as a secretary for the Navy field office in Norfolk, Virginia, during World War II. She and James "Jack" Randolph Thomas were married in 1943, and the couple moved to Portland, Oregon in 1954. They had four children. She attended Reed College during the 1960s and earned a master's degree in history. She died in 2011.
