Father John Wheeler at the Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother

Father John Wheeler stands in front of the cave at the National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother (The Grotto) in Portland. Inside the cave, standing on pillars of rock, are three statues. The statue at center is a marble replica of Michaelangelo's Pietà, depicting Mary holding the body of Jesus. On either side is a statue of an angel raising a torch (negative 1 of 6).

Clergy are conducting the service at the altar at the base of the grotto. The number 34 is written on the negative and is visible in the upper right corner of the image.
