Adalbert G. Bettman photographs

The collection contains 64 glass negatives, 44 sheet film negatives, and 39 photographic prints taken by or attributed to the Bettman family between approximately 1880 and 1920. Thirty-five of the prints have corresponding negatives in the collection. Negative numbers are noted on the back of prints when known. The collection includes individual and family portraits, views of the interior and displays of the Bettman drugstore, photographs depicting medical equipment and practice, including a neck brace and Adalbert G. Bettman’s sanitary measuring sugar bowl, and scenes throughout Oregon, including Portland, Eugene, and Corvallis. This collection may be of interest to individuals researching the history of medicine, pharmacy, and plastic surgery in Oregon.

Robbery suspect Johnny Ramay, being treated by Dr. Ward A. Anderson and Asenath Evans, after he was injured fleeing from the Irving Street pharmacy (638 N.W. 23rd Avenue) in Portland. Ramay and another suspect, William Benson, were arrested for holding up the pharmacy and taping up pharmacist Milton Olshen. A similar photograph was published in the Oregon Journal on Monday, February 16, 1948 (negative 3 of 5).

Dr. Robert H. Shiomi sits next to his wife, Ruby Shiomi, who is laying in a bed with a wrapped arm and head. Ruby was beaten with a hammer after an intruder entered their home and office at 1111 S.W. Vista Avenue in Portland. A similar photograph was published in the Oregon Journal on Friday, May 23, 1947 (negative 1 of 2).

Photograph showing Dr. C. U. Moore, medical director of a well-baby clinic in South Portland, listening to an unidentified baby’s lungs with a stethoscope. A cropped version of this photograph was one of two published on Page 12 of the Oregon Journal on Sunday, January 16, 1921, under the headline “Keeping Babies Well.” The photographs had the caption: “Views of Infant Welfare association clinic in South Portland.” This photograph had the following additional caption information: “Dr. C. U. Moore making lung test.” The photographs accompanied a story with the headline “Better Babies Is Object Off [sic] Clinic Conducted Here” and the subheading “Skeptical at First, Mothers Fast Learning Their Infants Thrive as Result of Recommendations.” Image note: The text “Moore, Dr.” is written on the negative sleeve.

Two men speaking to doctor? and nurse? outside Rialto Theatre during run of ‘Sins of Love’

Photograph showing two men speaking to a man in a white coat and a woman in a nurse’s uniform outside the Rialto Theatre in Portland during a run of the film “Sins of Love.” They are standing next to a large sign advertising Professor Howard Goldin, who gave lectures at showings of the film. The Oregon Journal published a story about “Sins of Love” on Sunday, May 7, 1933, the day before the film opened at the Rialto. The story, headlined “Operation Is Feature of Picture,” gave the following description of the film: “The mysteries of a women’s hospital, we are told, are revealed in ‘Sins of Love,’ coming Monday to the Rialto theatre screen. This German-made picture, filming in a women’s hospital in Zurich, Switzerland, is reported to present actual happenings, including a complete Caesarian operation, graphic but bloodless. The celebrated Dr. Lorens is shown at work.” The story also reported that a physician and four nurses attended each showing; that audiences would be separated, with matinee showings for women and evening showings for men; that no one under 16 would be admitted; and that women’s showings included a lecture by Mrs. Jardine McCree and men’s showings included a lecture by Goldin.
