Scope and content

Photograph of a photograph. The original picture is a portrait depicting the Romanov family: Czar Nicholas II, his wife, Alexandra, and their five children. The original photograph is probably circa 1914. The background has been masked out. Written on it are an arrow pointing to Alexandra and the words “Czarina only.” A cropped version of this photograph was published on the front page of the Oregon Journal on Friday, March 16, 1917, with the following caption: “Czar Nicholas and his family, now scattered because of the revolution. The czar is endeavoring to reach Pskoff, the czarina is at Petrograd, victim of a hysterical attack, while the czarevitch, 13-year-old Alexis, is seriously ill. Left to right, Grand Duchess Tatiana, Grand Duchess Marie, the czar, the czarina, Grand Duchess Anastasia, the czarevitch and the Grand Duchess Olga.” Image note: The number 184 is etched on the negative.
