Biographical history

Richard "Dick" Eugene Groener was born in Lafayette, Oregon, in 1917. In 1923, his family moved to Oregon City. After high school, he spent some years in Alaska, first working in a cannery and then mining for gold. He returned to Oregon in 1940 and worked as a welder in the Portland shipyards, and in 1941, he and Chloris Clodine Puderbaugh were married; they later had two children. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He returned to Oregon in 1948 and opened an insurance office in Milwaukie. He served in the Oregon House and Senate as a Democrat for most of the period from 1955 to 1982. He founded the Clackamas County Chamber of Commerce and served as its first president. He died in 1996.

Tape 1, Side 2. In the first interview session, conducted on September 13, 1988, Groener discusses his early life in Oregon City, Oregon, including his experiences during the Depression. He speaks at length about working in Alaska in a cannery and mining gold. He talks about his experiences in the Merchant Marines during World War II, including spending time in China. He then talks about his involvement with the Democratic Party and why he first ran for elected office. He discusses his service in the Oregon House of Representatives and in the Oregon Senate from 1955 to 1982, including his political campaigns and his two primary defeats. He describes the garden-party style of fundraisers he often held, talks about his association with Wayne Morse, and shares his opinions of the Oregon governors who held office while he was in the Legislature.
