Biographical history

Michael Robert Hogan was born in Oregon City, Oregon, in 1946. He grew up on a ranch in Myrtle Point, Oregon. In 1968, he earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon, and in 1971, he earned a law degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. While in D.C., he also worked as a Capitol police officer. In 1970, he and Christine Campbell were married; they later had three children. His first legal job was as a law clerk for Judge Robert C. Belloni. He was a lawyer with the firm that later became Miller & Nash in Portland for one year, then served as a federal magistrate judge, from 1973 to 1989, and a federal bankruptcy judge, from 1973 to 1980, for the District of Oregon in Medford. He became a judge on the U.S. District Court of Oregon in 1991, and served as chief judge from 1995 to 2002. He took senior status in 2011, and retired in 2012.
