Biographical history

Sir James McDonald (1899-1989) was born in Scotland. He joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1917, serving as a gunner in the Bristol Fighters during World War I. He came to the U.S. in the early 1920s and was appointed British Consul for Oregon in 1938. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1967.

McDonald discusses his family background and early life in Scotland, his experiences during World War I in the Royal Air Force stationed in France, moving to Canada and working on farms in Alberta and Saskatchewan, moving to the United States, getting into the timber business, and becoming the British Consul in Portland just before World War II.
