Captain James Menzies was born in 1820 in Perth, Scotland. He came to the United States and to the Pacific coast in 1848 during the gold rush. He married Elizabeth Miller from Sauvie Island in 1848 and after she died in 1862, he married Lucy Taylor Crosby. In 1850, he and his family settled on an Indian reservation at the Grand Ronde. After some years they moved to Sauvie Island, where he bought the Miller Land claim. He died in 1883 and was buried in Salem.
