Lightships serve as floating lighthouses; the lightship in this photograph was built in Portland by Albina Marine Iron Works. The launch occurred during the Portland Rose Festival, and the ship was christened by the festival queen, Caroline Hahn. A cropped version of this photograph was published on Page 1 of the Oregon Journal on June 14, 1930, under the headline “Queen Speeds Lightship Down Ways.” The photograph had the following caption: “Launching of craft to guide mariners past Fire Island in New York harbor.” Also on Page 1 was a brief story about the ship, headlined “Rose Fete Spirit Marks Launching.”
