A hand colored map depicting Oregon and Upper California. The map shows the area of the United States west of the Continental Divide and locations of Native American tribal groups. A profile of the travelling route from the South Pass of the Rocky Mountains to the Bay of San Francisco is included at the top of the map. Relief is shown by hachures and spot heights.

Consists of correspondence (1848-1869) concerning the conduct of Indian affairs in Oregon, enlistment of a state militia, and efforts to establish a Union League Council. Correspondents include Benjamin Alvord, Jesse Applegate, Benjamin Bonneville, Samuel Culver, Addison C. Gibbs, and Joseph Lane. Also included is a diary (1857) kept by Palmer while on a voyage from Oregon City to Washington, D.C. via Panama; typescript copies of diaries (1854, 1856, 1860-1861) recording his travels throughout the Pacific Northwest; hand written copy of an agreement (1854) between the United States, represented by superintendent of Indian Affairs, Joel Palmer, and the Calipooia Indian tribe; and articles of incorporation (1862) of the Columbia River Railroad Company.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of an older man wearing suit and facing to the right of the camera. Handwritten note enclosed with the image reads, "Dr. Bennet Tyler was first president of the East Windsor Seminary in Connecticut (now Hartford Theological Seminary) and successor to Dr. Edward Payson in Portland, Maine, Second Parish Church. He baptized Elizabeth Payson (Howe) around 1835." An overmat under the cover glass on the lower right reads, "Cone, Artist." Case is made of wood and leather.

The map shows the locations of Native American tribal groups, "positions where Troops are needed," and "routes that had been traversed by Troops or by which Frontier Posts may be supplied." Relief is shown by hachures. The map is approximately the southwestern quarter of a larger map with the same title.

Papers of Delazon Smith, an early Oregon journalist and political figure in Linn County, Or., who served briefly as one of the first U.S. Senators from the state. Includes letters from Delazon Smith to his wife Mary, some of which detail Smith's journey to the east coast in 1858 and admission of Oregon to the Union in 1859. Also included are letters from Smith family members, including Delavan Smith, a soldier in the Civil War; legal documents and speeches; and transcripts of Delazon's Smith's letters to the Oregon Weekly Times describing conditions in the state and providing advice to overland travelers.

A hand colored map of the western portions of the United States of America in 1845. The map shows emigrant routes from Missouri to Oregon with reputed distances of chief points of interest along route. The "Gold Region" is highlighted in yellow in northern California. Also depicted are locations of Native American tribal groups. Imprint: "Philadelphia Published by Thomas Cowperthwait & Co. Market St. No. 253. 1849 / Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1845 by H.N. Burroughs in the clerks office of the District Court of the eastern district of Pennsylvania." Relief shown by hachures.

Case made of pressed leather and wood.

Case contains 2 portraits. On the left is a portrait of a woman seated at a table. She wears a dress and holds a book on her lap. Two additional books are displayed on the table. One has the words, "Holy Bible" written on its spine. On the right is a portrait of a man seated at a table. He wears a suit and rests his right arm on the table. Typed note enclosed with the image reads, "Daguerreotype Rev. Nehemiah Doane and wife taken about 1849. Acc. No. 9852." Reverend Doane was a Methodist Episcopal minister who became superintendent of the Oregon Institute, known today as Willamette University, in Salem, Oregon. His wife's name was Matilda Draper Doane. Legacy collection records indicate that this photograph may have been taken just prior to their move to Salem, Oregon. The image of Nehemiah Doane was previously named: OrgLot1414_0234S011. Case is made of wood and leather.

Contains mostly biographical information about Palmer, along with letters written by his descendants and letters relating to the dedication of a statue of Palmer in 1971.

A piece of paper enclosed with the image shows a family crest with a handwritten note reading,"Seal of the Buckinghams." She is possibly a member or friend of the Buckingham family. Case is made of leather. Case cover missing and replaced with archival board during conservation.
