Failing, Emily Phelps (Corbett)

Emily Phelps Corbett, who married Henry Failing in Portland, October 21, 1858. She was the younger sister of Henry Winslow Corbett, and a pioneer to Oregon in 1851, via the Isthmus of Panama.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a woman wearing a dress with a white lace collar. Enclosed with the image are 2 obituaries. The first is for Mrs. Nettie Chase, also known as Mrs. Dr. E. Y. Chase. The second is for Mrs. Sarah Chase. Legacy collection records indicate this was taken circa 1859. Case has been replaced with archival board.

The soldiers are from Company L, Third Artillery division attached to Fort Umpqua at the Oregon Coast. A handwritten caption on the back of the photograph reads, "Co "L", 3rd Artillery, U.S.A. at Camp Day, Looking South, 1860. Photograph by Lt. Lorenzo Lorain." There is also a handwritten caption on the back of the print that is covered by a backing board. The legible portion of the note reads, "August, 1860."
Camp Day was a temporary military encampment established in the Klamath Basin in Southern Oregon during the summer and fall of 1860. The military expedition was a response to reports of potential conflicts between members of the Klamath and Modoc people and Euro-American settlers concerning land use and territorial rights.

Lucinda Miller (Ford) Haley, born in 1840 in Missouri, pioneer of 1844 to Oregon. She settled in Polk County and married William Thompson Haley on July 22, 1858. She died in Santa Rosa, California, in 1867.

An unidentified group of people stand in front of a low, hewn-log structure near Fort Umpqua in Douglas County, Oregon Territory. The structure is likely a cedar plank house constructed by members of the Coos, Lower Umpqua, Siuslaw, or Siletz peoples held at a camp on the bank of the Umpqua River on the southern border of the Coast Reservation near Fort Umpqua.

One salt print portrait from page 35 of an album of photography by Lorenzo Lorain (OHS Album 101). The man in the portrait is unidentified, but a note below the photograph indicates that he may have been Lorain's brother in Pennsylvania. He also may have been someone associated with Fort Umpqua in Douglas County, Oregon Territory. A handwritten note below the photograph reads, "Lorenzo Lorain had a brother in Pennsylvania, could this be he?"

Portrait of Catharine Forstner

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a seated girl wearing a floral print dress. She looks at the camera. Typed notes affixed to the outside of the case read, "Catharine Forstner b. Bethel, Mo. 1850. This picture taken in Missouri in 1860. She was 10. Grandmother of Eugene E. Snyder." Conservation records indicate a photographer's imprint which reads, "Aurora, Ore." Accompanying notes state that this print was generated circa 1880's or 1890's, possibly as a replacement for the original image. Case is made of wood and pressed paper.

A typed note on an index card reads, "Trevett, Mrs. Mary Bancroft. Picture from a Daguerreotype taken in the Fifties." Imprint on velvet lining of case indicates the photographer is McDonell & Co. in Buffalo, New York. Case is made of wood and leather.

The mother and girls wear dresses while the father wears a suit. Handwritten note enclosed with the image reads, "George W. Brown and family, Harriett (wife), R. Melissa, Harriett." Engraving below the image reads, "J. P. Ball, Cincinnati." Ball was a prominent African American photographer, and one of the few to take daguerreotypes. Image was in wooden frame and replaced with archival board during conservation.
