The photograph was probably taken at the 1938 Pacific International Livestock Exposition in Portland. A photograph of the same man and horse, image No. 374N1184, probably taken on a different day than this image, was published in the Oregon Journal on Saturday, October 8, 1938. The ribbon bears the 4-H emblem and the text “Boys’ and Girls’ 4-H Clubs / First / Premium /1940.” The photograph was taken at the Multnomah County Fair in Gresham, Oregon and was published in the August 23, 1940 issue of the Oregon Journal.
