Beatty, Mary Joanna (Thomson)

Mary Joanna Thomson, who married Daniel C. Beatty (Beaty) on December 16, 1856. She came overland from Indiana, starting in April 1853, via the South Pass, and arrived in Oregon in October 1853. They settled in Portland.

Hatch, Mary J. Tracy

Married first to E. W. Tracy, and settled in early Portland. After his death in 1866, she married J. H. Hatch, a dentist in Portland from 1866 to 1876.

Hawkins, Mary Ruth

The niece of Dr. Henry McKinnell, an Oregon pioneer and the first homeopathic physician in Portland, whose home for many years was on the southwest corner of 4th and Main Streets. Miss Hawkins became heir to his property upon his death. She never married.

Helm, Reverend William

Reverend William Helm, born in Virginia in 1800, and pioneer to Oregon in 1845, with his family. They established a donation land claim in Champoeg County in 1846 and remained in Marion County.

Himes, Judson Wickliffe

Judson Wickliffe Himes, pioneer of 1853 and Justice of the Peace. He was born in Lafayette, Stark County, Illinois, March 9, 1850. He crossed the plains with his parents and learned the trade of a baker. He was a woodsman for a few years, then a cruiser. Later he became a Justice of the Peace, school clerk, and real estate and insurance agent. He died August 14, 1916, at Elma, Washington.

Hines, Gussie

Gussie Hines of Columbus, Washington (now Maryhill, Washington); died at the age of 9. She was the daughter of Gustavus K. Hines.

Hirsch, Edward

Born in Wurtemburg, Germany, in 1836, Edward emigrated to the United States in 1855. He and his brother, Solomon, came to the West via the Isthmus of Panama in 1858. The brothers were merchants in a number of locations in Oregon over many years. He was a State Treasurer from 1878 to 1887 and served as a Senator from Marion County from 1890 to 1894. He died in Salem in 1909.
