Oral history interviews with Lewis L. McArthur and Taz Conner

These oral history interviews with Lewis L. McArthur and Taz Conner were conducted by an unidentified person on September 28, 1999. The interviews are recorded on the same audiocassette: McArthur's interview is on side 1, and Conner's on side 2.

In McArthur's interview, he speaks at length about his family background. He then briefly talks about his education and about his career in the steel industry. He describes the work of his father, Lewis A. McArthur, on the early editions of the book "Oregon Geographic Names," and his own work on later editions of the book. He also discusses his service on the Oregon Geographic Names Board and on other boards.

In Conner's interview, he discusses his goal of reclaiming the ancestral land of the Wallowa band of the Nimiipuu (Nez Perce) people. He talks about federal land that is managed by Native people, and about efforts to lobby the U.S. government to expand Native land management programs. He discusses his identity as a member of the Wallowa band and as an Oregonian. He talks about his service in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1972, about his education and jobs after his discharge, and about how diabetes has affected his health. He shares how he got the nickname "Taz."

The collection consists principally of the typescript (with corrections in hand) of Horner's work, Wallowa River and Valley, dealing with regional history, as well as the Nez Percé Indians. Other papers include correspondence (ca. 1889-1985); legal documents (1898-1931); patents for window construction (1921-1922); and manuscript materials (undated). Horner's main correspondent is Otis Halfmoon, a Catholic Nez Percé who assisted with the author's manuscript. The collection also includes a list of other contributors that assisted Horner in his research

This oral history interview with Erskine Wood was conducted by Pierre Kolisch and Marian Wood Kolisch on July 11, 1974. The interview was part of a series conducted by Kolisch to accompany portraits of Oregon artists, businesspeople, and politicians. Louise Wood was also present and occasionally contributed to the interview.

In this interview, Erskine Wood discusses spending summers with Chief Joseph and the Nimiipuu (Nez Perce) people in the Wallowa Valley, Oregon. He describes daily life, discusses living conditions on reservations, and talks about recreational activities, including horse races and games. Pierre Kolisch discusses his plan to visit members of the tribe in Idaho. Wood talks about photographs he took on glass plates while visiting Chief Joseph. He closes the interview by briefly discussing some of the artists that were acquainted with his father, C. E. S. Wood.

This oral history interview with Erskine Wood was conducted by Robert E. Jones and Charles S. Crookham on February 22, 1965.

In this interview, Wood discusses the naval career of his father, C. E. S. Wood, as well as his father's friendship with Chief Joseph of the Nimiipuu (Nez Perce) people in the Wallowa Valley, Oregon. He describes spending summers with Chief Joseph in 1892 and 1893. He then talks about C. E. S. Wood's law practice in Portland, Oregon, including some of the cases he worked on and lawyers he worked with. He discusses studying the law, joining his father's law firm, and specializing in admiralty law. He talks about cases he worked on, and about judges he argued before. He also discusses the history of the Skidmore Fountain.
