Owner of Roscoe's Oyster House, Astoria, Oreg. Born in 1843. born in Richmond, Va. Sent by Underground Railroad to New Bedford, Mass. Later came west with part of the family and lived in Astoria until Railroad came to Portland, lost their business & moved to Seattle. 1 son- Chester Dixon born in Astoria about 1881?" The photograph is a copy print from an earlier photograph.

Two hand-written notes written below the photograph read, "Gen. Thomas B. Scott [Thomas is crossed out]," and, "or Major John B. Scott." There is a darkened space immediately below the photograph were a now missing photograph was once attached.

   The identities of the people and the exact location in the photographs on this page are unknown, but the photographs likely depict members of the Coos, Lower Umpqua, Siuslaw or Siletz peoples held at a camp on the bank of the Umpqua River on the southern border of the Coast Reservation near Fort Umpqua.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a woman and 2 children. The woman holds a baby in her lap while a young child stands at her side. The woman is identified as Lucinda Sumner Hadlock and they two children are likely Samuel W. Hadlock and Lillian Hadlock. Typed note enclosed with the image reads, "Mrs. Lucinda Sumner Hadlock, a pioneer of 1852, and children. Taken by Buchtel, Portland, O. T., 1856. In later life this lady was known as Mrs. Taylor." Case is made of leather. Case cover missing and replaced with archival board during conservation.

Cased photograph of a group of houses. A two-story, white house in the middle is surrounded by a white fence. Legacy collection records indicate this is the home of John Miller Drake on SW Front and Meade Street in Portland, Oregon. A handwritten note on the envelope speculates that an alternate location could be Canemah, Oregon. Drake served in the Army and worked for the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company. Case is made of wood and leather.

Cased photograph of the steamboat Multnomah in dock. Several crew members pose on the decks of the ship and on the dock. Handwritten label enclosed with the image reads, "Str. Multnomah." Legacy collection records indicate this dock was located at the foot of Alder Street in Portland, Oregon. The Multnomah operated on the Willamette and Yamhill Rivers. Case is made of wood and leather.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of photographer Joseph Buchtel and his daughter. Buchtel stands next to his daughter, holding a watch up to her face. The girl is seated and wears her hair in braids. Both look to the right of the camera. Handwritten note affixed to the case reads, "Joseph Buchtel and daughter." Legacy collection records indicate this is likely his daughter Lucy. Case is missing its cover.

A cartes-de-visite photograph of an unidentified man in a Civil War uniform. He stands with his left hand tucked into the front of his jacket and looks directly at the camera. Legacy records indicate that he is associated with the Taylor family. The photograph has been cut down to fit within a wood and leather case. A pencil note on the the interior of the case back was documented during conservation work on the item. It reads, "Dear George [illegible]."
