Mrs. D. W. Barnes with two men on day of her first airplane flight

Photograph of a woman, Mrs. D. W. Barnes, and two men standing in front of a Ryan monoplane with “C-2071” on the tail. Barnes celebrated her 90th birthday by taking her first airplane ride. Her son, E. L. Barnes (possibly the man on the right), accompanied her on the flight, and the plane was flown by pilot Gordon Mounce (center). The Oregon Journal published a short story about Mrs. Barnes’ flight on Page 12 of the June 27, 1928 edition, under the headline, “Mrs. D. W. Barnes Goes Skylarking.” The story was accompanied by a different photo of Mrs. Barnes on the day of the flight, image No. 371N5892. Image note: “Mrs D W Barnes” is written on the negative and is visible on the left side of the image.

A cropped version of this photograph and image No. 371N5592 were published on Page 24 of the Oregon Journal home edition on January 10, 1930, under the headline “Future Aviation Heads for China.” The photographs had the following caption: “Seven Chinese youths have registered at Adcox Aviation school, No. 280 Union avenue north, in line with announcement that such groups will be trained there at the Chinese government’s expense.” This photograph had the following additional information: “Three of the group learning all about an airplane wing from R. E. Gilliam, chief instructor at the school.” The photographs accompanied a story headlined “Chinese Take Up Aviation Here.” See additional related image No. 371N6166.

L. B. Waltz being lifted into ambulance after arriving in Portland by plane for medical treatment

Photograph showing L. B. Waltz of Selah, Washington, lying on a stretcher as two unidentified attendants lift him into an ambulance. The photograph was taken at Rankin Field in Portland after Waltz arrived by airplane for medical treatment on March 28, 1928. That day, the Oregon Journal published a front-page story about Waltz’s flight and a related photograph, image No. 371N5966. The story, headlined “Patient Brought Here in Airplane,” reported that Waltz, a teacher, had been injured in a car wreck a week earlier and was flown from Yakima, Washington, to Portland by pilot Tex Rankin.
