Also on the building is an awning printed with the text “Carver’s Restaurant.” The photograph may have been taken at Southeast Water Avenue and Southeast Yamhill Street.

Fire damage at Sharff furniture warehouse and Central Supply in Portland

A room damaged by a fire at the Sharff furniture warehouse and Central Supply building, at S.W. Front Avenue and S.W. Yamhill Street in Portland. Stacks of boxes can be seen throughout the room, with a burned platform and ladder at the far end. Photographs from this series were published in the Oregon Journal on Wednesday, September 21, 1949 (negative 7 of 9).

Montgomery Ward building, Portland, September 1920

Photograph showing the exterior of the nine-story Montgomery Ward warehouse in Portland in September 1920, several months before it opened. A cropped version of this photograph was published on Page 6 of the Oregon Journal on Sunday, September 5, 1920, under the headline “Montgomery Ward Building at Guilds Lake.” The photograph had the following caption: “Pacific coast distributing headquarters of Montgomery Ward & Co., located on a 10-acre tract bounded by Twenty-Seventh, Twenty-ninth, Wilson, and Vaughn streets. The plant will begin operations with 1000 employes [sic] about January 1.” The photograph accompanied a story about the building, headlined “Montgomery Ward Plant to Open January 1.” Also see image No. 376G0168, which may be related. Image note: The text “Montgomery Ward construction” is written on the negative sleeve.

High water on the Willamette River during a high water event in Portland. The water can be seen at the bottom of the warehouse building for “Rudie Wilhelm” outside which a boat is moored (“Mike Laudenklos”). Fire Boat Station No. 1 can also be seen, with water just below the level of its dock (negative 5 of 20).
