Rex Oregonus dismounting from elephant

Photograph of Tommy Luke, in the role of Rex Oregonus, sliding off a crouching elephant at Multnomah Civic Stadium during the 1929 Rose Festival. Rex Oregonus was co-regent with the Rose Festival queen. Portland Mayor George L. Baker is walking nearby on the right side of the image. Rex Oregonus on Portland Rose Festival parade float

Portrait of a man wearing a robe, sash, and plumed turban. He is standing on a float with six young women in matching gowns and headdresses. The man is holding a key to the city made from radishes, beets, and carrots. The words “Rex Oregonus” are painted along the bottom of the float. This photograph was probably taken at the 1929 Rose Festival, when Tommy Luke was crowned Rex Oregonus, co-regent with the festival queen. The number 8 is written on the negative and is faintly visible in the lower right corner of the image. Also see image No. 371N4402.

Negatives documenting company activities, including electrical infrastructure, employees, power generation and distribution throughout Portland, the Willamette Valley and the Oregon Cascade Range. Additional general images include streetcars and trains, street lighting, power line installation, Rose Festival floats, office buildings, car barns and bridges. Of particular note are dam building projects at Bull Run and along the Clackamas River (1910-1930), and early electric stations in Oregon City at Willamette Falls.

Portland Rose Festival Float with large ski jump structure

Photograph showing a flower adorned float at the 1951 Portland Rose Festival at Multnomah Stadium, with the large wooden ski jump structure in the background (at 155 feet high, the structure was built to celebrate the upcoming 1952 Oslo Winter Olympic Games). Two women in large flower skirts and a man in a tuxedo can be seen on the float in the center, while another float with a 4-H logo can be seen to the right. Extensive scaffolding can be seen under the ski jump.
