Newell, George Palmer

George Palmer Newell, born in Yorkshire, England, on May 23, 1810. He came to the United States in 1828. "He came across the plains from Michigan to California on the back of a mule, in company with 50 mean riding mules, and each had a pack mule - in 1848 or 1849." He married Emma Weston (of Burlington, Iowa) on July 18, 1852, in Oregon City. George Newell was a professor of music and also worked as Surveyor of Customs at Pacific City. He died November 13, 1886.

Seth R. Hammer, a resident of Salem, Oregon, beginning in the early 1860s. Reputed to be one of the "characters" of the city, he was a dealer in real estate and a civil engineer.

Joseph Daniel Lee, the husband of Eliza Alice Witten, who was born and raised in Polk County, Oregon. He served as State Senator for Polk County for four years (1880-1884) and served a total of about ten years in the state legislature.

Parrish, Samuel B.

Samuel B. Parrish, son of Rev. Josiah L. and Elizabeth (Winn) Parrish, born February 25, 1838, in New York. They came to Oregon in 1840. In his early years, he worked in his father's book and stationery store in Portland, and was the Portland Chief of Police during the years 1886-90. He also worked as the Malheur Indian Agent for a time. He married Adda Hawley in 1885, and died in Portland on July 12, 1897.

Holman, Joseph

Joseph Holman, pioneer of 1840, born in 1815 in England. He was one of the people at Champoeg, on May 2, 1843, who voted in favor of the organization of the Provisional Government of Oregon.

Holman, George Phelps

George Phelps Holman, son of James Holman, born in Salem February 6, 1842, and said to be the first man born in Oregon to become a member of the Oregon Legislature. He died in July 1927.
