Photograph of President Franklin D. Roosevelt (left), Oregon Congressman Charles H. Martin, and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt seated in the president’s car at the Bonneville Dam construction site on August 3, 1934. The president arrived in Portland that day, then traveled to the dam site, where he gave a speech about the project. A cropped version of this photograph was one of nine that were published on Page 4 of the Oregon Journal on August 4, 1934, under the headline “President Roosevelt Visits One of Administration’s Big Projects.” The images were part of a two-page photo spread included in the newspaper’s coverage of Roosevelt’s visit.
