Aerial photograph showing the Mount Hood Loop Highway and the Government Camp area southeast of Mount Hood. The landscape is mostly snow-covered. Government Camp is at center. At lower right is part of the wing of the plane from which the photograph was taken. A cropped version of this photograph was one of 10 that were published on the front page of the Oregon Journal Sunday magazine on June 5, 1932. The photographs accompanied a story, headlined “Looping the Loop by Air,” that recounted an airplane trip following the route of the Mount Hood Loop Highway and described the views from the air. The photographs had the following caption: “Glimpses of familiar scenery snapped by Roy Norr, Journal staff photographer, in ‘doing’ the Mont [sic] Hood Loop the air way.” This photograph had the following additional information: “Government Camp in a white landscape.” See image Nos. 371N5679, 371N5698, 371N5704, 371N5716, 371N5717, and 371N5721, which were published on the same page as this photograph. Photograph showing a row of cars parked outside the Battle Axe Inn in Government Camp, Oregon. The inn is surrounded by deep snow, and the inn’s roof and some of the cars are snow-covered. A cropped version of this photograph was one of two that were published on the front page of the Oregon Journal on December 31, 1934, under the headline “Mount Hood Snow too Plentiful for Skiing.” The photograph had the following caption: “Too much, not to little, snow forced postponement of Sunday’s scheduled Mount Hood ski tournament until New Years [sic] day.” This photograph had the following additional caption information: “Cars buried in snow in front of Battle Ax [sic] Inn.” The photographs accompanied a story, headlined “Predict Good Ski Weather For New Year,” which reported that about three feet of snow had fallen since the previous Friday. Image note: A mark that may be the number 1 is written on the negative and is visible in the upper right corner of the image.

Photograph showing tents and a small building at the Civilian Conservation Corps’ Toll Gate camp. The first residents of the camp were men from Illinois. The camp was located off the Mount Hood Loop Highway (now Highway 26) near Rhododendron, Oregon, several miles from the CCC camp at Zigzag. A cropped version of this photograph, along with image Nos. 372A0751, 372A0752, and 372A0762, was published on Page 2 of the Oregon Journal on Sunday, May 28, 1933.
