Agriculture and animals

Photographs related to agriculture, horticulture, and animals from approximately 1920 - 1945. The bulk of the photographs depict people, animals, and scenes at fairs and livestock shows, probably the Multnomah County Fair in Gresham, Oregon, and the Pacific International Livestock Exposition in Portland, Oregon. Other images depict topics such as cats, dogs, wild birds, poultry, and Tusko the elephant; farms and farmland; flowers, flower shows, and gardens.

Football

Photographs of football players, coaches, and games, taken circa 1920-1940. The photographs are probably primarily of players and teams from Portland high schools; many of the people, teams, and games are unidentified. Portland teams represented in the collection include Benjamin Franklin High School, Clinton Kelly High School of Commerce, Jefferson High School, Lincoln High School, Roosevelt High School, Ulysses S. Grant High School, and Washington High School. Portland locations include the former Washington High School, Lincoln High School, and Multnomah Stadium (now Providence Park).

Head and shoulders portrait, taken Tuesday, August 15, 1922, of Dr. Henry Waldo Coe at a groundbreaking ceremony for the Theodore Roosevelt statue in Portland’s south park blocks. A cropped version of this photograph was one of four, including image Nos. 373G0032 and 373G0037, that were published on Page 7 of the Oregon Journal city edition on Wednesday, August 16, 1922. The photographs were published under the headline “When The First Earth Was Turned.” This photograph had the following caption: “Dr. Henry Waldo Coe, donor of the Roosevelt statue.” See additional related image Nos. 373G0031, 373G0034, 373G0035, and 373G0036.

Head and shoulders portrait of an unidentified man facing front and smiling. He is wearing a straw hat, a suit jacket and vest, a collared shirt, and a tie. He is probably standing outside the Journal Building (now known as the Jackson Tower) in Portland. A mark that may be the number 1 is written on the negative and is visible in the lower left corner of the image.

Grand Central Market representatives with anniversary cake

Full-length portrait of eight men posing with a three-layer cake displayed on a table, probably at Grand Central Market on Southeast Morrison Street in Portland. On the front of the cake are the words “Our Third Anniversary.” A cropped version of this photograph and a short story were published on Page 6 of the Oregon Journal on Sunday, November 6, 1932, under the headline “Market to Have Birthday.” The photograph had the following caption: “Committeemen representing the Grand Central Public market who will direct the third anniversary birthday party at the market on November 9, inspect the huge birthday cake. From left—James Rogers, Charles Gates, Herman Vielmetti, Joe Kappel, Fred Koenig, who made the cake; R. P. Lewis, J. H. Sroufe, general manager of the market, and George Bakke.”

A cropped version of this photograph was published on Page 7 of the Oregon Journal on Friday, December 8, 1933, under the headline “Prepare ‘Hot Time’ in Chinatown.” The photograph had the following caption: “Leaders and regalia which will head a parade Sunday through Chinatown by Suey Sing tongmen celebrating their establishment in new headquarters at 510 Southwest 2d avenue. The man-footed lion, which will dance through the streets, is pictured in the foreground and is surrounded by the banners and other paraphernalia which will flank it during the parade.” The photograph accompanied a story about the upcoming celebration, headlined “Local Chinese to Celebrate in Big Parade.”
