Kent, Deborah B. (Gaddis)

Deborah Blair Gaddis (Feb. 1, 1824 - March 11, 1909), who married Horace Ayrault Kent in October 1842. Originally from New York, they came overland from Illinois in 1853 and settled in Forest Grove, then Portland, in 1855. He died in Multnomah County in 1859 and was buried in Lone Fir Cemetery. They had three children: Fannie (b. 1846), Edward Horace (b. 1849), and William Gaddis (b. 1856).

Transcription from back: “George Henry Knaggs. Photo taken about 1866. Pioneer of 1852 from Council Bluffs, Iowa. Married Miss Juliet Caldwell March 31 1852 at St. Louis, Mo. Their honeymoon was spent in crossing the Plains – Apr. 15 to Oct. 22, 1852. Before coming to Oregon was a Purser on a boat on the Missippi (sic) River running between St. Louis & New Orleans. After coming to Oregon was a Purser on a steamboat belonging to the Oregon City Navigation Company for many years.”

Transcription from back: “Pioneer of 1853, Rev. Plutarch Stewart Knight, Pastor of the Congregational Church at Salem, Oregon. Had much to do with organizing the School for the Deaf and Dumb of Oregon, at Salem in 1870. He was Assistant Principal and Speaking Teacher of this institution from 1872 to 1874. After 1874 he was Principal at different times for a good many years, and several years after became Superintendent of the institution, which position he held for a number of years. He married Miss Eleanor Smith.”
