Parrish, Samuel B.

Samuel B. Parrish, son of Rev. Josiah L. and Elizabeth (Winn) Parrish, born February 25, 1838, in New York. They came to Oregon in 1840. In his early years, he worked in his father's book and stationery store in Portland, and was the Portland Chief of Police during the years 1886-90. He also worked as the Malheur Indian Agent for a time. He married Adda Hawley in 1885, and died in Portland on July 12, 1897.

Holman, Joseph

Joseph Holman, pioneer of 1840, born in 1815 in England. He was one of the people at Champoeg, on May 2, 1843, who voted in favor of the organization of the Provisional Government of Oregon.

Quackenbush, Edward

Edward Quackenbush, who was born in 1839 in New York. He came to San Francisco via the Horn as a young man and was educated in accounting. When the firm of Allen and Lewis, in Portland, was in need of a bookkeeper, he came to Portland and soon began work at the Ladd and Tilton Bank, where he was an eventual manager. He was very involved in in civic activities, being credited with having founded the Portland Chamber of Commerce and the Y. M. C. A. He is also largely credited with the organization of the first baseball team in the city. He married Anna Clarke Hasty (or Hastie) on September 5th, 1867, in Multnomah County. They had one son, Fred, who died several days before Edward, in 1928. Anna passed away at their summer home in Hood River, in 1911.

Britt, Peter, 1819-1905

Holman, George Phelps

George Phelps Holman, son of James Holman, born in Salem February 6, 1842, and said to be the first man born in Oregon to become a member of the Oregon Legislature. He died in July 1927.

Blain, Leighton E.

Leighton E. Blain, born in 1842 in Porter County, Indiana. He came overland with oxen in the spring of 1848 and arrived in the fall of that year. He settled in Oregon City as a merchant and married Mary Miller in Albany in about 1868. He died May 8th, 1927.

Born in Massachusetts, married Mary Ann Saunders, August 4, 1863, at Frost Prairie, Thurston County, Washington Territory. His wife was a survivor of the Whitman Massacre.

Protzman, Kate D. (Lyle)

Kate Drew Lyle, born in 1854 in Pennsylvania, who married Eugene C. Protzman in 1876, and resided in Portland. Her husband worked with his brother (F. C. Protzman)at a boot and shoe store, Protzman and DeFrance, located at Third and Alder. Kate and Eugene had three daughters, Edna E., Margaret L., and Kate Lyle Protzman.

Paxton, Andrew B.

Shaver, Moriah Emily (Kelly) and Zorah M. (Kelly) Truman

Moriah Emily (Kelly) Shaver (left) and Zorah M. Kelly Truman (right) (1855-1880), daughter and granddaughter of Clinton and Moriah (Cain) Kelly. Zorah was the daughter of Hampton and Margaret Kelly, so Emily was her aunt. Zorah married J. R. Truman in 1875, and died in 1880 of consumption.

Lyman, Reverend Horace

Rev. Horace Lyman, born in Massachusetts. He came to Oregon from New York via Cape Horn, and arrived in October 1848. He married Mary Dennison on November 1, 1848. They settled in Portland, where he taught school and organized the First Congregational Church on June 15, 1851. He was instrumental in building the first house of worship in Polk County in 1854 and taught mathematics at Pacific University in 1857. His wife died in 1874, and he remarried Mrs. Margaret D. Duncan on December 9, 1882. He died on March 31, 1887, in Forest Grove.
