Letter written by Delazon Smith to his wife, Mary Shepherd Smith on February 14, 1859. The letter announces the admission of Oregon as a state in the Union. It also includes an account of Smith drawing lots with Joseph Lane for the length of their senatorial terms.

Photograph of Fort Walla Walla, taken on May 1st, 1859. The photograph was originally owned and may have been taken by Frederick Tracy Dent (1820-1892). Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Frederick Tracy Dent (1820-1892) served as a career military officer for the United States Army, and served as captain of the 9th United States Infantry at Fort Walla Walla from circa 1859-1860. Dent participated in the Spokane and Yakima expeditions, and engaged in the combat of "Four Lakes," and Spokane Plains. Dent was brother-in-law to Ulysses S. Grant. In 1859, Fort Walla Walla was part of the incorporated Washington Territories in Washington State.

Emily Phelps Corbett, who married Henry Failing in Portland, October 21, 1858. She was the younger sister of Henry Winslow Corbett, and a pioneer to Oregon in 1851, via the Isthmus of Panama.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a woman wearing a bonnet and looking at the camera. Legacy collection records indicate this may be the mother of O.H.P. Taylor. There is advanced oxidation on the image. Case is made of wood and leather. Top half of case is missing.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a woman wearing a dress with a white lace collar. Enclosed with the image are 2 obituaries. The first is for Mrs. Nettie Chase, also known as Mrs. Dr. E. Y. Chase. The second is for Mrs. Sarah Chase. Legacy collection records indicate this was taken circa 1859. Case has been replaced with archival board.

A hanging scroll style Catholic Ladder based on the designs of Francis Norbert Blanchet copyrighted in 1859. The ladder is written in English and is titled, "A Catholic Ladder or a Chronological and Historical Chart of the Christian Religion and Doctrine." A handwritten note on the back of the ladder reads, "Chronological Chart of Christian Religion by Rev. F. N. Blanchett." The document is a printed lithograph with illustrations and descriptions of biblical scenes used by Blanchet and other missionaries as an instructional tool for Christian evangelization to Native American and French métis communities.

The military expedition was a response to reports of potential conflicts between members of the Klamath and Modoc people and Euro-American settlers concerning land use and territorial rights.

Lucinda Miller (Ford) Haley, born in 1840 in Missouri, pioneer of 1844 to Oregon. She settled in Polk County and married William Thompson Haley on July 22, 1858. She died in Santa Rosa, California, in 1867.

Joseph Brannan and wife, Sarah Virginia (Henness), pioneers of 1852, with their first daughter, Mary A.

An unidentified group of people stand in front of a low, hewn-log structure near Fort Umpqua in Douglas County, Oregon Territory. The structure is likely a cedar plank house constructed by members of the Coos, Lower Umpqua, Siuslaw, or Siletz peoples held at a camp on the bank of the Umpqua River on the southern border of the Coast Reservation near Fort Umpqua.

The man in the portrait is unidentified, but a note below the photograph indicates that he may have been Lorain's brother in Pennsylvania. He also may have been someone associated with Fort Umpqua in Douglas County, Oregon Territory. A handwritten note below the photograph reads, "Lorenzo Lorain had a brother in Pennsylvania, could this be he?"

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a seated girl wearing a floral print dress. She looks at the camera. Typed notes affixed to the outside of the case read, "Catharine Forstner b. Bethel, Mo. 1850. This picture taken in Missouri in 1860. She was 10. Grandmother of Eugene E. Snyder." Conservation records indicate a photographer's imprint which reads, "Aurora, Ore." Accompanying notes state that this print was generated circa 1880's or 1890's, possibly as a replacement for the original image. Case is made of wood and pressed paper.
