Al Fausett's overturned canoe below Willamette Falls

Photograph of an overturned canoe floating in rough water below Willamette Falls, near Oregon City. It has the words “Al Fausett’s canoe” on the side. The photograph was taken March 31, 1928. A cropped version of this photograph was one of four published on the front page of the Oregon Journal on April 1, 1928, under the headline “Dare-Devil Falls Jumper and His Narrow Squeak at Oregon City.” This photograph had the following caption: “ ‘Bottoms up’ at foot of falls, with Fausett underneath.’ ” According to an accompanying story, headlined “Leaps Falls; Death Close,” Fausett was attempting to shoot Willamette Falls in a specially designed canoe, but the craft went over the falls sideways and resurfaced upside down. Photograph of Willamette Falls in Oregon City taken by Lorenzo Lorain circa 1857. The photograph is taken from the edge of the Willamette River looking upriver to the waterfall. There are several structures around the falls on both sides of the river. The typed caption glued below the bristol board on the front of the photograph reads, "Falls of the Willamette River at Oregon City. About 1857 or 1858. Taken by Lt. Lorenzo Lorain, U.S.A. Donated to Oregon Historical Society, 1946, by S. H. Lorain, Albany, Oregon."

Negatives documenting company activities, including electrical infrastructure, employees, power generation and distribution throughout Portland, the Willamette Valley and the Oregon Cascade Range. Additional general images include streetcars and trains, street lighting, power line installation, Rose Festival floats, office buildings, car barns and bridges. Of particular note are dam building projects at Bull Run and along the Clackamas River (1910-1930), and early electric stations in Oregon City at Willamette Falls.
