Al Fausett going over Willamette Falls in canoe

Photograph showing daredevil Al Fausett going over Willamette Falls sideways in a canoe on March 31, 1928. A cropped version of this photograph was one of four published on the front page of the Oregon Journal on April 1, 1928, under the headline “Dare-Devil Falls Jumper and His Narrow Squeak at Oregon City.” This photograph had the following caption: “ ‘Canoe dropping at crest of falls.” According to an accompanying story, headlined “Leaps Falls; Death Close,” Fausett was attempting to shoot Willamette Falls in a specially designed canoe, but the craft went over the falls sideways and resurfaced upside down. Photograph of an overturned canoe floating in rough water below Willamette Falls, near Oregon City. It has the words “Al Fausett’s canoe” on the side. The photograph was taken March 31, 1928. Photograph of Willamette Falls in Oregon City taken by Lorenzo Lorain circa 1857. The photograph is taken from the edge of the Willamette River looking upriver to the waterfall. There are several structures around the falls on both sides of the river. The typed caption glued below the bristol board on the front of the photograph reads, "Falls of the Willamette River at Oregon City. About 1857 or 1858. Taken by Lt. Lorenzo Lorain, U.S.A. Donated to Oregon Historical Society, 1946, by S. H. Lorain, Albany, Oregon."
