There are street car tracks in the street and a street car, horse drawn buggies, and bicyclists are visible on the street. A painted sign for the Domestic Sewing Machine Office is visible on the side of a building to the left of the photograph. A handwritten description on the back of the photograph reads, "Portland, 1895 (possibly Morrison)."

A handwritten description on the back of the photograph reads, "Looking South on 18th from near Chapman (Jefferson) to Portland Hts (RHE 11-23-99)." A second, handwritten description which has been crossed out reads, "23rd Ave. Cable Car (from Burnside), 1895."
