Lorenzo Lorain letters, 1855-1968

Collection consists of twenty-one autographed letters written by Lorenzo Lorain between 1855 and 1861. The letters contain descriptions of Lorain's military service, including yellow fever epidemics, the forced removal of Native peoples from the western region of the Oregon Territory to the Coast Reservation, and his photography. The letters are addressed from West Point Academy, Aspinwall, Fort Dalles, San Francisco, Fort Walla Walla, Fort Umpqua, and Camp Day near the Klamath Basin. The correspondents include Lorain's father, Dr. Henry Tilden Lorain, and his sisters, Mary Jane Ashman and Martha (Merty) Eliza Lorain. Also included in the collection are biographical research notes and correspondence concerning Lorenzo Lorain and Edward Perry Vollum, collected by Nancy A. Hacker between 1958 and 1968.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a seated young woman, wearing a dress with a white collar and fingerless black gloves. Legacy collection records speculate that this may be Eloisa McLoughlin, daughter of John McLoughlin. Her married name was Eloisa McLoughlin Rae Harvey. Case is made of wood and leather and is missing its cover.

Escala Católica Y Misteriosa de Jacob [The Catholic and Mysterious Ladder of Jacob], 1856

Catholic ladder designed by F. N. Blanchet. The ladder is written in Spanish and printed in Valparaíso, Chile in 1856. Blanchet developed the ladder as a visual teaching aid with illustrations of biblical scenes. Blanchet and other missionaries used the ladders as an instructional tool for Christian evangelization to Native American and French métis communities. Handwritten notes on the back of the document read, "July 26, 1902, St. Mary's Academy & College," and, "Catholic Chart, 1839, c. 1856."

Portrait of William Morse Barker as a child

Uncased tintype featuring a portrait of a seated child wearing a patterned dress. The child looks at the camera. Legacy collection records indicate this is William Morse Barker, son of George R. Barker and Anna Morris Barker, who was born in 1854. Records also indicate the child is a sibling of Bishop Morris. A stamp on the back of the tintype plate reads, "Patented 19 Feb 1856." Barker's siblings are pictured in OrgLot1414_0246S034 and OrgLot1414_0246S035.

Framed portrait of General Joseph Lane, seated and wearing a suit. He looks at the camera. Typed note enclosed with the image reads, "This is a very rare portrait of General Joseph Lane. It was presented to the Oregon Pioneer Association by Mrs. Winifred Mosher, his youngest daughter, in 1900. In response to an inquiry regarding the date when it was taken, she said she thought it was in 1855 or 1856 -- at any rate, during the Indian war in those years -- and by Joseph Buchtel in Portland. The portrait was called an ambrotype."

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a seated woman wearing a printed blouse and skirt. She wears a beaded necklace bearing a cross. She rests her hands on her lap and looks at the camera. Typed note enclosed with the image reads, "Mrs. John Simonis (Nee Magdalena Simonis.) Born Germany 1836, Died Wolf Creek, Oregon 1912. Picture circa 1856." Handwritten note on the envelope reads, "Related to the mother of Harry L. Dale. These people came from Germany to Wisconsin in 1848, settling first in Wisconsin and then removing to Oregon about 1872." Legacy collection records speculate that this photograph may have been taken by a photographer named Britt. Case is made of wood.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a woman and 2 children. The woman holds a baby in her lap while a young child stands at her side. The woman is identified as Lucinda Sumner Hadlock and they two children are likely Samuel W. Hadlock and Lillian Hadlock. Typed note enclosed with the image reads, "Mrs. Lucinda Sumner Hadlock, a pioneer of 1852, and children. Taken by Buchtel, Portland, O. T., 1856. In later life this lady was known as Mrs. Taylor." Case is made of leather. Case cover missing and replaced with archival board during conservation.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a seated, elderly woman. She wears a bonnet and a shawl. Her right arm rests on a table next to 2 books. Handwritten note enclosed with the image reads, "Mindwell Lee - My father, W. B. Lee's grandmother of Madison, Conn. Sweet, Christian character. Would ask father, when a young man on vacation from college: "Wm. are you a Xn?" "Well you will be; I'm prayin' for you. How's your Aunt Charlotte?" and he never forgot it. Died Oct. 30, 1856, aged 93 yrs at the old hou. down near Uncle Henry's. Oct. 30 '56 was t. day F. T. Lee was born... -Geo. H. Lee, Owner." Case is made of leather and wood. There is no hasp hook on case. A string is tied to the hook loop.

Legacy collection records indicate this is Eva Emery Dye. Dye was an author and supporter of the women's suffrage movement. Case has been replaced with archival board.
