Map of Henry Miller's overland journey to Oregon, circa 1852

A hand drawn map showing Henry Miller's route from Ft. Wayne, Indiana, to Oregon. The map includes notations about significant events or landmarks encountered on the trail. Diaries and other papers of Henry Miller are designated Mss 24 in the Oregon Historical Society research library.

A hand-colored, lithographic map showing the surveyed portions of the Oregon Territory in 1852. The notation in the bottom, right corner of the map reads, "Surveyor General's Office / Oregon City October 21st, 1852." A note in the upper, left corner of the map reads, "Senate Ex. doc. No. 1, 2nd Sess. 32nd Cong." Relief shown by hachures.

The collection consists of correspondence, journals, ship logs, administrative records, and ink sketches relating to the ship Columbia Rediviva. A mix of original materials and reproductions are present. Among the originals are: the journal of John Hoskins, written during the Columbia's journey around the world in 1791-1792; the journal of George Barrell, 1806, written on board the brig Venus from Boston to Malaga, and on the schooner Louisiana from Malaga to New York; Barrell's account of stores on board the Columbia, 1792-1793; letters of Joseph Barrell to Samuel Webb, 1785-1801, and to John Hoskins, 1790; letters from Colburn Barrell and Robert Haswell, 1801; owner's accounts, 1787-1793; accounts of the Columbia and Lady Washington, 1787-1790; receipts; and four ink sketches by George Davidson depicting incidents in the voyages of the Columbia.

The reproductions held in this collection include the journals of Robert Haswell and Owen Smith, 1787-1789; and a file of receipts and other papers concerning outfitting of the Columbia, 1790 (on microfilm). Also included are publications of Robert Gray's wife Martha's petition to congress for a pension and memorial, 1848-1852.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a young woman wearing a long sleeve dress and a cross around her neck. A typed label enclosed with the image reads, "Henrietta L. Averill-Johnson. Born Portland, Maine, Aug. 10 - 1836. Died in Portland, Oregon, May 19 - 1926." Second typed label enclosed with image reads, "Johnson, Henrietta L. Averill. Presented by Mrs. William F. Griesel Rec. No. 495." These labels have been removed and stored in a separate folder. This photograph depicts the same woman shown in OrgLot1414_0221S001_01, in which her name is written as, "Henrietta Leaver (Averill) Nichol." Case is made of wood and leather.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a young man wearing a suit and looking at the camera. His hair is parted on the left. Typed note attached to case reads, "Rev. C. C. Stratton, Age 19 years. Donated by Mary A. Stratton, Rec. 580." A second, handwritten note enclosed with image reads, "Rev. C. C. Stratton, Age 19 yrs." Legacy collection records indicate this is Reverend Charles Carroll Stratton, the first president of Portland University in Portland, Oregon. Case is a velvet covered oval case.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a bearded man, wearing a suit. He looks at the camera. Typed note affixed to the front of the case reads, "Henry C. Northrop, 1853." Handwritten note affixed to the inside of the case reads, "Henry Northrop. Printer - came to Oregon in 185 .(sic) Worked on first issue of Pacific Christian Advocate; also on the Democratic Standard in 1854." Case is made of leather and wood.

A typed note enclosed with the image reads, "CLARKE, Samuel A. 25 years old." The words, "McIntyre, Broadway, NY" are stamped into the brass window mat. Case is made of leather.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a seated woman wearing a bonnet and long sleeve dress. Her left arm rests on a book on a table. She holds an object in her right hand. Handwritten label enclosed with the image reads, "Sarah Pope 1853." Second handwritten label reads, "Sarah Pope." Collection records indicate she is possibly the wife or sister of Ephraim Pope. Case made of pressed leather and wood.

Steamboat Multnomah

Cased photograph of the steamboat Multnomah in dock. Several crew members pose on the decks of the ship and on the dock. Handwritten label enclosed with the image reads, "Str. Multnomah." Legacy collection records indicate this dock was located at the foot of Alder Street in Portland, Oregon. The Multnomah operated on the Willamette and Yamhill Rivers. Case is made of wood and leather.

D. C. Coleman store

Cased photograph showing an exterior view of the D. C. Coleman store, located on the southeast corner of Oak and Front Street in Portland, Oregon. Several men stand in front of the store and 2 men shake hands near the front door. This was one of the first brick buildings constructed in Portland. Legacy collection records indicate this photograph was taken in 1853, the same year the building was constructed. Image has been removed from case and placed in archival board case.

Portrait of Mrs. George Smith

An ambrotype portrait of Mrs. George Smith. The image surface is in poor condition and is now too dark to pull much detail from the photograph, but it appears to show a portrait of a woman wearing a wide, white collar and a white bonnet. Legacy records indicate that this is a companion portrait to an ambrotype of George Smith, of Salem, Oregon, taken in 1853. A handwritten note on the interior of the case reads, "Mrs. George Smith, Salem, Oregon, 1853." The photograph case is made from wood and embossment paper with a gold mat.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a man wearing a suit. His hair is parted on the right and he looks at the camera. Typed note enclosed with the image reads, "Thomas, John T. Unidentified, probably Thomas family." Inscription on window mat identifies photographer as, "Spooner Bros, Springfield, Cuttings Patent, July 11, 1854." Case is made of wood and pressed paper.

Crosby, Mary (Lincoln)

Labeled as being Clara (Smith) Crosby, but she was the wife of Alfred Crosby. The matching card to this one is of Nathaniel Crosby, Jr. His wife was Mary (Lincoln) Crosby.

Steamboat Wallamet

Cased photograph of the steamboat Wallamet. The boat's captain can be seen behind the wheel and several other crew members pose on deck. A sign on the side of the boat reads, "U.S. Mail Wallamet." Typed label enclosed with the image reads, "Steamer Wallamet." Likely taken in Oregon on either the Willamette or Columbia Rivers. Case is made of wood and leather.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a woman wearing a dress and jewelry. Her brooch and earrings feature a hand-applied gold pigment. The image is darkened and damaged. Legacy collection records indicate this is Charlotte Augusta (Averill) Morse of Portland, Maine, wife of William L. Morse. Records also indicate this was taken circa 1854. Case is missing.

Cased photograph featuring a portrait of a woman looking at the camera. She wears a black dress clasped with a brooch at her neck and her hair is parted down the middle. Handwritten note enclosed with the image reads, "Grandma Rice? Shortly after the death of her husband - 1854." [The question mark and the date were added in pencil after the writing of the original note.] Rice is also featured in OrgLot1414_0245S007_01. Case is a union case made of thermoplastic.

A daguerreotype portrait of an unidentified woman. She is seated looking directly into the camera with one are resting on a table and holding a book while the other arm rests in her lap. She wears a black silk dress and a white house-cap. The velvet on the interior of the case is embossed with a studio stamp reading, "From Ford's Daguerrean Gallery, Clay St. San Francisco and Sacramento City." Details in the photograph are hand-tinted in gold and rose inks.
