Men eating turkey from burnt barracks building in Galena, Alaska

Five men wearing heavyweight snowsuits eating turkey in the rubble of the mess hall at a military encampment in Galena, Alaska. The mess hall burned in a fire during "Operation Snowbird," a polar military training exercise. The photograph was published in the January 26, 1955 Oregon Journal with the caption, "Kitchen was overdone but the turkey was perfect after fire destroyed mess hall and other buildings Monday at site of Operation Snow Bird in Alaska. Turkeys had been placed in field ovens Sunday night to roast for Monday dinner. After charred remains of buildings cooled, men ate birds, but complained jokingly of cook who failed to make dressing."
