Transcript. This speech was delivered by Aaron M. Frank on March 24, 1949, at the Meier and Frank Department Store in Portland, Oregon. In this speech, Frank urges the assembled store employees to resist union organizing efforts. He enumerates the benefits provided to employees by Meier and Frank, gives examples of management and employee loyalty, lists his responsibilities as director, and makes a plea for an employee vote of confidence. The employees ultimately voted against unionization.

Transcript. This oral history interview with Howard C. Stearns was conducted by Leon Speroff from January 21-23, 1980. The interview was conducted in two sessions. In the first interview session, conducted on January 21, 1980, Stearns discusses his career as a member of the University of Oregon Medical School faculty, including other members of the faculty, running his own medical practice on the side, and his promotion to department chair in 1945. He also talks about his reasons for leaving the university in 1957. He then discusses his family background and early life in Portland, Oregon; his service in the Merchant Marines during World War I; and his experience studying entomology at Oregon State University, and medicine at the University of Oregon Medical School. He talks about practicing obstetrics and gynecology and describes some of the common procedures he conducted, including some graphic descriptions of childbirth. In the second interview session, conducted on January 23, 1980, Stearns continues to discuss practicing obstetrics and gynecology. He talks about his service as chair of the of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Oregon Medical School. He then discusses his children, their careers, and their families. He closes the interview by talking about his involvement with Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland and teaching obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Oregon Medical School.

Transcript. This oral history interview with Wolcott E. Buren was conducted by Nancy Gerhardt, Buren's daughter, at Nehalem Bay State Park in Oregon on August 27, 1978. In this interview, Buren discusses an eight-day hike he took along the Oregon Coast from Seaside to Newport in 1916 with Arthur "Pug" Ross. He describes the equipment they brought, the route they took, where they slept, and the people they met.

Oregon Coastal Scenes sketchbook

A bound volume containing charcoal sketches of Oregon coastal scenes drawn by Alice E. Wilson between 1898 and 1899. The scenes depict houses, landscapes, and canneries in the central Oregon coast region including Garibaldi, Tillamook, and Seaside. A note of provenance taped to the inside of the book reads, “April 22, 1960. This album of original charcoal drawings was donated to the Oregon Historical Society by Dr. O. S. Driskell, D.D.S. Portland, Oregon. His aunt Miss Alice E. Wilson visited beach resorts for many years just prior to the turn of the century. Her pictures are quite authentic and readily identified by older residents. Miss Wilson and Dr. Driskell’s family were in the Old Grimes House the night it was razed by fire. D. H. Bates, Past-President Oregon Historical Society, April 1960.”

Catholic ladder designed by F. N. Blanchet. The ladder was printed in Paris circa 1846 and is written in French. The ladder is in four sections on two double-sided panels.Blanchet developed the ladder as a visual teaching aid with illustrations of biblical scenes. Blanchet and other missionaries used the ladders as an instructional tool for Christian evangelization to Native American and French métis communities.
