Kiutus Tecumseh and his father posing with unidentified woman and plane

Photograph of Kiutus Tecumseh (left, in plane); his father, also Kiutus Tecumseh; and an unidentified woman at Swan Island airport in Portland on Sunday, August 10, 1930. They are posing with a Hans Mirow Flying Service airplane. On Monday, August 11, 1930, the Oregon Journal published a brief story about the two men on Page 11, under the headline “Two Indian Chiefs Tour Sky Lanes in Portland Airplane.” The Journal reported that the younger Kiutus Tecumseh, a singer, was on his fourth radio concert tour, and that he and his father had taken a flight with the Mirow service during a stop in Portland. The younger Tecumseh resided in Wenatchee, Washington, and the elder in Yakima, Washington, according to the story. In this photograph, the younger Tecumseh is standing in the rear seat of the plane and is holding a hatchet in one raised hand and some of the woman’s hair in the other hand. He is wearing a feather headdress and a beaded vest and gloves. The woman is standing on the ground in front of him, smiling; she is wearing a sweater, collared shirt, tie, and breeches. The elder Tecumseh, standing next to the woman, is wearing a cowboy hat, a collared shirt, a beaded vest and gloves, and breeches.

Photograph of four men in front of an airplane. The three men on the left, Thomas Colby, Charles W. Meyers, and Bill Baldwin, were the team of Plane 19, a Waco, on the 1928 Ford National Reliability Air Tour; the man on the right is unidentified. The tour reached the Swan Island airport in Portland on July 16, 1928. Meyers was the pilot. The name Meyers is painted on the plane and the number 6528 appears on its tail. The text “T. B. Colby — Charles Myers [sic] — Bill Baldwin” and number 2 are written on the negative. The the writing is visible on the right side of the image.

Eddie Cooper, L. F. Schoenhair, and Ray Acre, team of Plane 23, Ford National Reliability Air Tour

Portrait of three men, Eddie Cooper, L. F. Schoenhair, and Ray Acre, in front of an airplane. They were the team of Plane 23, a Lockheed monoplane, on the 1928 Ford National Reliability Air Tour. The tour reached Portland on July 16, 1928, and the Plane 23 team was the first to arrive at the Swan Island airport. Schoenhair was the pilot and Cooper was the mechanic. The text “Cooper — Schoenhair — Acre” and the number 9 are written on the negative and are visible on the right side of the image.

Amelia Earhart

Three-quarters portrait of pilot Amelia Earhart sitting on a couch, facing front, and holding a bouquet of roses. The photograph was taken on Wednesday, February 1, 1933, after Earhart arrived in Portland to give a lecture. That day, a story about Earhart and a related photograph, image No. 374N0284, were published on the front page of the Oregon Journal. See additional related image Nos. 374N0282 and 374N0283. Lieutenant Oakley G. Kelly and Captain John M. Stanley in plane after return to Pearson Field

Photograph of two aviators, Lieutenant Oakley G. Kelly (front seat) and Captain John M. Stanley (rear seat) in an airplane after their return to Pearson Field in Vancouver, Washington, on Friday, January 7, 1927. Kelly is handing his parachute to a man on the ground. A similar photograph, image No. 371N1395, was published on Page 3 of the Oregon Journal on Saturday, January 8, 1927. According to a story that accompanied the photograph, Kelly and Stanley had left on Wednesday, January 5, to conduct an aerial search for a boy, Leslie Brownlee, who was missing on Mount Hood. However, they were caught in a storm and dense fog, the Journal reported, and were forced to fly east and land in a field about five miles from Long Creek, in Grant County. According to the article, they spent the night in the field with the plane and walked to get help and fuel the next morning. On their return flight, they were delayed by another storm and spent the night of Thursday, January 6, in Pendleton before continuing to Vancouver on January 7. Photograph, taken August 24, 1928, of a Portland girl, Carol Mangold, handing pilot Tex Rankin her pet cat to take with him on a national air race from New York to Los Angeles. A cropped version of this photograph was published on Page 2 of the Oregon Journal on August 24, 1928, under the headline “Tex is a Modern Ajax.” The photograph had the following caption: “Tex Rankin, about to set sail for the East to enter the national air races, decides to put an end for all time to hoodoos. Not content with entering his bus under the number 13, he takes along a black cat, borrowed for the occasion from little Carol Mangold, No. 1429 Mississippi avenue. The cat’s name is Alba Barba, which is Latin for something-er-another. But anyway, ‘Alba’ doesn’t mean black, even if the cat is. Dud Rankin with wife and children before endurance flight?

Photograph of a man, woman, and two children outdoors next to an airplane. The people in the photograph are probably (from left) pilot Dudley “Dud” Rankin; his son, Dudley; his daughter, Iva; and his wife, Sylvia. The photograph was probably taken on August 17, 1930, at the Rankin airport on Union Avenue in Portland, before Dudley Rankin and his brothers, Tex Rankin and Dick Rankin, began their first attempt to set an endurance flying record. The attempt, along with three subsequent flights in August 1930, was unsuccessful. In all four flights, brothers flew a Stinson Detroiter monoplane named On-To-Oregon, which is the plane partially visible in the background of this photograph. Tex Rankin in airplane On-to-Oregon, shaking hands with Maurice L. Smith

Photograph showing pilot Tex Rankin leaning out of the cabin of a Stinson Detroiter monoplane, the On-to-Oregon, to shake hands with Maurice L. Smith, manager of Jantzen Beach. The photograph was taken on Sunday, August 17, 1930, at the Rankin airfield in Portland before Tex Rankin and his brothers, Dick Rankin and Dud Rankin, began their first attempt to set an endurance flying record. Jantzen Beach financed the effort. The attempt begun August 17 was one of four tries, all unsuccessful, that the Rankins made that month. Rankin borrowed the black cat to accompany him on a national air race from New York to Los Angeles. Alba Barba was one of two “jinxes” that Rankin deliberately adopted for the race; the other was to enter his plane under the number 13. Photograph of two unidentified men lifting L. B. Waltz of Selah, Washington, onto a stretcher from an airplane after he arrived at Rankin Field in Portland for medical treatment on March 28, 1928. That day, the Oregon Journal published a front-page story about Waltz’s flight and a related photograph, image No. 371N5966. The story, headlined “Patient Brought Here in Airplane,” reported that Waltz, a teacher, had been injured in a car wreck a week earlier and was flown from Yakima, Washington, to Portland by pilot Tex Rankin. The photograph was taken on Saturday, November 28, 1931, after Hawks flew from San Francisco for a brief stay in Portland. A cropped version of this photograph was one of three that were published on Page 3 of the Oregon Journal’s city edition on Sunday, November 29, 1931. The photographs were published under the headline “Three Hours From San Francisco.” They had the caption: “Captain Frank M. Hawks said his exact time from San Francisco to Portland Saturday was three hours and five minutes. But at that, he wasn’t trying for speed—just jogging along.” This photograph had the following additional caption information: “Three famous fliers get together (from left), Hawks, Dorothy Hester, and Tex Rankin.” The photographs accompanied the continuation of a front-page story about Hawks.
