Photograph of Captain W. W. Crawford mounted on a horse at the 1928 Pacific International Livestock Exposition in Portland. Crawford’s unit from Fort Lewis, Washington, performed drills at the exposition. A cropped version of this photograph, along with image Nos. 374N836 and 374N848, was published on Page 12 of the Oregon Journal on November 2, 1928. The photographs were published under the headline “Some of the Champions Here for Week.” This photograph had the following caption information: “Captain W. W. Crawford on ‘Bess,’ the officer and horse who command 60 horses and 60 men in the famous Black Horse Brigade, battery D, third field artillery of Fort Lewis, one of the chief exhibits of the horse show.” Also see image No. 374N0847.

Mounted soldiers from Lord Strathcona’s Horse regiment

Photograph of two uniformed men from Lord Strathcona’s Horse, a Canadian cavalry regiment (now an armored unit). Both men are on horseback; the man on the right is holding a pennant, and the man on the left is holding a bugle with a small banner attached to it. On the banner are the letters “LSH.” The photograph was probably taken at the 1938 Pacific International Livestock Exposition in Portland, at which soldiers from the regiment performed drills. The men are unidentified.

Photograph of a horse standing near a building and parked car at the 1938 Pacific International Livestock Exposition. An unidentified man who may be Luther Harrel is holding the horse’s lead rope. A cropped version of this photograph was published on Page 6 of the Oregon Journal on Tuesday, October 4, 1938. The photograph had the following caption: “Harrel’s Jupiter Darling, 3-year-old Belgian mare, many times a champion, again judged grand champion mare of her breed at Pacific International exposition. She is owned by Luther Harrel of Ellensburg, Wash.” Jupiter Darling was also mentioned in an article on Page 3 of the October 4 edition, titled “Harrel Belgian Mare Grand Champion.” The man in this photograph may also be pictured in image Nos. 374N1104, 374N1106, 374N1110, 374N1171, and 374N1173.

L. L. Hawkin's wagon, Jupiter, filled with children

A tintype in a paper mount depicting a group of children from the Boys & Girls Aid Society taking a ride in Lester Leander Hawkin's horse-drawn wagon, Jupiter. The wagon is parked in front of the Pioneer Post Office (today the Pioneer Courthouse) in downtown Portland, Oregon. A handwritten note from the back of the paper case reads, "L. L. Hawkin's Tally-Ho "Jupiter." 34 children taking a ride."

Several horse-drawn wagons are on the unpaved street in front of the buildings. Several men stand around large metal pieces in front of the foundry. A handwritten caption on the back of the photograph reads, "Portland, 1857. West side of First Street, between Yamhill and Morrison, showing the foundry owned by Monnastes & David, and the Union Hotel."
