The date, "4.17.1865" is handwritten into the velvet lining of the case. This was likely taken as a memorial for President Abraham Lincoln, 2 days after his assassination. Legacy collection records contain a note reading, "Proprietary 3 cent stamp with hand cancelation John Julius Spencer." Case is made of wood and leather with embossed paper.

Accompanying notes state that this print was generated circa 1880's or 1890's, possibly as a replacement for the original image. Case is made of wood and pressed paper.
