Roosevelt arrived in Portland that day, then traveled to the dam site, where the president gave a speech about the project. A cropped version of this photograph was one of nine that were published on Page 4 of the Oregon Journal on August 4, 1934, under the headline “President Roosevelt Visits One of Administration’s Big Projects.” This photograph had the following caption: “Mrs. Roosevelt, with one of her broadest smiles bids adieu to Bonneville.” The images were part of a two-page photo spread included in the newspaper’s coverage of Roosevelt’s visit.
