Protestant Ladder

Illustrated Protestant ladder used for the teaching of the catechism in the mission of Henry H. Spalding and Eliza Spalding at Lapwai in present-day western Idaho in the traditional territory of the Nimi’ipuu (Nez Percé). The ladder depicts religious history and biblical concepts with captions in English and Nimipuutímt. The ladder is painted on cloth-backed paper using ink and berry dyes.

Officers Quarters. Fort Boise, Idaho

This photograph, taken of the Officers Quarters at Fort Boise, Idaho in 1868, was originally owned and may have been taken by William Russell Parnell. The photograph depicts several soldiers posing outside the store, with an inscription on the back, “Compliments of Dr. Moffatt.” The inscription refers to the military surgeon Dr. Peter Moffat, who also served at Camp Harney. Parnell's signature is visible on top-left corner of photograph.

Map and Short Story of the PNW, Embracing Oregon, Washington and Idaho, 1904

A map of the Pacific Northwest depicting railways and steamship lines in the region, primarily Oregon and Washington. Lines at the top and bottom of the map read, "The Northwest presents the greatest opportunities for settlers of any portion of "Uncle Sam's" domain. For grains, grasses, live stock and minerals the territory embraced in this map is unequalled." The back of the map is a pamphlet titled, "Map and Short Story of the Pacific Northwest embracing Oregon Washington Idaho." The pamphlet contains information about various aspects of the region, including climate, agriculture, mining, lumber, and schools and churches. Inset maps include the route of the Oregon Short Line Railroad and a bird's-eye view of the Lewis and Clark Exposition Grounds.

Construction of Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway Tunnel 15 near Farrington, Washington. Two unidentified people stand on partially constructed railroad tracks underneath a wooden support structure. The Snake River is visible on the left side of the photograph. A handwritten note on the back of the photograph reads, "Cable Dump (?) and Tunnel. Pine Tree Rapids. This fill is 200 feet from bottom coulee to grade. Tunnel 15 west of Farrington, M. P. 266.3"
