Photograph showing Helen Hawkins smashing a bottle on the front of a new Southern Pacific company bus during a ceremony outside Portland City Hall on September 19, 1927. Watching at right is Portland Mayor George L. Baker; at left is Mrs. Herbert Malarkey. The ceremony celebrated the new Southern Pacific bus service to the Willamette Valley. The Oregon Journal published a short story, headlined “New Bus Line is Christened in Portland,” on Page 2 of its September 19, 1927 city edition.
