Derricks Lifting Parts of Old Morrison Bridge from Willamette River

A derrick in the middle of the Willamette River picks up a log and moves it onto a barge. Other pieces of discarded wood and construction materials are piled on the barge. These are pieces of the old Morrison Bridge, which is being replaced. In the foreground, a second derrick sits on the border of the river. View taken from the east side of the river, looking west toward downtown Portland and the KPOJ Journal building (negative 2 of 3).

Machinery for Eugene sewer contract on SP&S train

Photograph of a train carrying construction machinery on flat cars to fulfill a sewer contract in Eugene, Oregon. A sign on the side of the train reads, "These ten cars are loaded with machinery to be used by James Kennedy of Fargo, North Dakota on the $500,000.00 sewer contract at Eugene, Oregone (sic)." The name "Clark" is handwritten on the bottom of the print and this photograph was likely taken by F. Melvin Clark. Handwriting on the back of the print reads, "Eugene."

First freight train on the Oregon Electric Railway extension

Machine Laying Tracks for Oregon Electric Railway

Photograph of a group of railroad construction workers standing on railroad tracks in front of a machine mounted on a flatcar. They are laying new railroad tracks. The flatcar is long and carries a locomotive and stacks of wooden planks for construction. Scattered men on the flatcar look at the camera. This construction was part of the extension of the Oregon Electric Railway to Albany and Corvallis. Handwritten note on the back of the print reads, "Oregon Electric track laying machine at work on Albany-Corvallis extension."

Negatives documenting company activities, including electrical infrastructure, employees, power generation and distribution throughout Portland, the Willamette Valley and the Oregon Cascade Range. Additional general images include streetcars and trains, street lighting, power line installation, Rose Festival floats, office buildings, car barns and bridges. Of particular note are dam building projects at Bull Run and along the Clackamas River (1910-1930), and early electric stations in Oregon City at Willamette Falls.
