Portland Cable Railway, Portland Heights trestle

Negatives documenting company activities, including electrical infrastructure, employees, power generation and distribution throughout Portland, the Willamette Valley and the Oregon Cascade Range. Additional general images include streetcars and trains, street lighting, power line installation, Rose Festival floats, office buildings, car barns and bridges. Of particular note are dam building projects at Bull Run and along the Clackamas River (1910-1930), and early electric stations in Oregon City at Willamette Falls.

Train barn at North Killingsworth Street and North Mississippi Avenue

A brick train and bus barn at North Killingsworth Street and North Mississippi Avenue. Numbers have been placed on the brick facade over bays, many of which hold a train or bus. At the ride side of the frame is a man using a hose to clean a train with a sign for “Broadway” on the front. Train tracks pass the front of the building (negative 13 of 14). Electric cables and streetcar cables in front of the Piedmont train barn, at North Killingsworth Street and North Mississippi Avenue looking west. At the far end of the street is 1011 North Killingsworth Street, at the corner of N. Michigan Avenue (negative 3 of 14). A street view of Union Avenue (Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard) at NE Schuyler Street. A street car with an Alberta Sign can be seen on the left side of the frame, and numerous business signs can be seen. Portland Auto Wrecking is on the left side of the street (negative 10 of 20). A streetcar crosses the intersection at SW Front Avenue and Madison Streets. Spear Linoleum Company store is on the corner, with a wrought-iron balcony on the second floor. Taken January 8, 1940.

Streetcar and buildings on 1st Avenue

A busy street scene on the east side of First Avenue, looking north from Alder Street toward Washington Street. A streetcar bound for Oregon City is in the street, along with several pedestrians and automobiles. Greene’s Building, at right, and First National Bank Building, both constructed in 1882, would later be occupied by the Beebe Co., at left. This block was demolished in the early 1950s to make way for the Morrison Bridge ramps. Taken January 17, 1940.
