History

Dr. Jean Phyllis Black (1903-1992) was born in Duluth, Minnesota. She moved around a lot as a child, spending much of it in Europe prior to World War I. She earned a Ph.D. in History from the University of Michigan and a B.S. in Library Science from the University of Washington. She studied for her doctorate in Rome. She was worked as a research librarian and ultimately became Portland State University's first librarian.
