Dr. Segel is a Professor of History and Humanities at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, specializing in European diplomatic history. He was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, and began the process of coming out as a gay man only after his arrival at University of California, Berkeley in the mid 1960s.

Dr. Segel has been involved in numerous gay social and political organizations both in Portland and abroad, including Gay Men Together, the Right to Privacy/Pride PAC, the St. Catherine's Society, and the Cookboys, to name just a few. He enjoys writing comic verse, especially parodies of Gilbert & Sullivan, and has written lyrics for the Portland Gay Men's Chorus.

Scott Philips (b. 1940) is a retired music teacher who taught at both the middle school and high school levels throughout the State of Oregon. Philips has been an active member of Portland's gay square dance club, the Rosetown Ramblers, for more than 20 years.

Raz, Werner, 1908-1984

Werner Raz was born in Hillsdale, Oregon, in 1908. He lived in what are now the Multnomah and Hillsdale neighborhoods of Portland, Oregon. He was the son of Swiss immigrants and grew up dairy farming. In 1938, he and Selma Emelia Jorgensen were married; they later had three children. Raz was an avid hiker and trail builder. He died in 1984.

Monner, Al (Alfred Anthony), 1909-1998

Alfred Anthony Monner was born on August 1, 1909, in Northeast Portland, Oregon. After spending much of his adolescence in the Kaskela and Madras areas, he later returned to Portland to attend Washington High School. Around this time, he also developed an interest in photography. After briefly attending Linfield College, he worked for Brubaker Surveys doing aerial photography, and as a printer for Photo Art Studio.

From 1936 to 1938, he worked as a photographer for the Oregonian newspaper in Portland, before being laid off. In 1938, he was hired as a photographer for the Oregon Journal newspaper, where he would stay until 1975. During his time as a photographer in Portland, Monner maintained friendships with fellow photographers in the area, including long-time friend Ray Atkeson. In the 1930s, he met Minor White, then a young freelancer living in Portland, and Monner later took master classes from him after White gained national recognition. Monner was also a member of the Oregon Camera Club. Beyond his commercial work for the Journal, Monner maintained a long-term personal interest in photography. He created photographs of Portland's Roma community, still-life scenes, landscapes, and portraits of everyday life in Oregon.

An avid outdoorsman as a young man, Monner was a member of the Mazamas, a mountaineering group in the Portland area, and was later a founding member of the Wy'East Climbers. Despite not considering himself a real climber, he summited Mount Hood 12 times, and also climbed Mount St. Helens. He continued to be a regular climber until the 1960s.

After retiring, Al Monner continued to take photographs for the Portland Art Museum. He died in 1998 after suffering a series of strokes.

Harmon, Florence E. (Florence Elizabeth), 1909-2010

Florence Elizabeth Harmon, nee Thuirer, was born in Summit, Iowa, in 1909. In 1931, she earned a bachelor's degree in home economics from Iowa State College, now Iowa State University. After graduating, she became a teacher. In 1933, she and Wendell Harold Harmon were married. That same year, the couple moved to a homestead near Elk City, Oregon, and began operating a tree farm on the land. After Wendell H. Harmon's death in 1999, an endowed research fellowship in forestry management was created in the Harmons' name at Iowa State University. Florence E. Harmon died in 2010.

Buehler, Elizabeth, 1921-2015

Elizabeth Buehler was born February 14, 1921, in The Dalles. She graduated from The Dalles High School in 1938 and Whitman College in 1942. For many years she was the field historian and editor at the Oregon Historical Society. Upon retirement, she served with the Peace Corps in Thailand.
