Roy Vincent Whiting was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1946. He earned a bachelor's degree in natural history from San Jose State University in San Jose, California. In 1968, he and Patricia D. Carpio were married. The couple moved to Corvallis, Oregon, soon after their marriage. He worked for GlaxoSmithKline for 40 years. He later earned an honorary doctorate from the Oregon State University College of Pharmacy. After Pat Whiting's death in 2010, Whiting remarried to Amira F. Andrade in 2014.

Dorothy Haberlach Thornton, nee Dorothy Marie Haberlach, was born in Tillamook, Oregon, in 1913. In 1937, she and Robert Y. Thornton were married; they later had one child. She was a painter and was active in many Oregon organizations, including the Portland Art Museum, the Salem Art Association, the Arts in Oregon Council, and the Watercolor Society of Oregon. In 1991, she was named Art Citizen of the Year by the Oregon Arts Commission. She died in 2005.

Robert Angus Duncan was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1946. In 1948, his family relocated to Oregon, and settled in Medford a few years later. In 1967, he earned a degree in government from Harvard University. From 1974 to 1979, he served as an aide to Portland Mayor Neil Goldschmidt, and continued to assist Goldschmidt in the U.S. Department of Transportation from 1979 to 1980. He participated in the creation of the 1980 Northwest Power Act. During the 1980s, he worked in the private sector for various renewable energy companies, and in 1990, he became a member of the Northwest Power Planning Council, now known as the Northwest Power and Conservation Council. He served as chair from 1994 to 1995.

Peter Magai Bul was born in Wangulei, Sudan, a village of the Dinka people, around 1982. In 1988, his village was attacked and he fled to Ethiopia with a group of other children from his village, known as the Lost Boys and Girls of Sudan. He spent several years in a refugee camp in Dima, being trained as a child soldier by the Ethiopian Army. He fled during the Ethiopian Civil War, and in 1992, he arrived at the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. In 2001, he was granted a visa to the United States and he settled in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Truman College, and earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Northeastern Illinois University. He became a public speaker, activist, and community organizer, and became a U.S. citizen in 2007.

Saxvik, Bob (Robert William), 1930-2016

Robert William Saxvik was born in Spring Grove, Minnesota, in 1930. His family moved to Iowa during World War II. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955, and flew 24 missions as a B-29 flight crew member during the Korean War. In 1958, he and Marilyn Anne DeMers were married; they later had three children. In 1959, he earned a bachelor's degree in education from Western Washington State College. From 1961 to 1978, he was vice president and general manager for KBAR Radio in Burley, Idaho. During his time at the radio station, he also served in the Idaho State Senate as a Democrat from 1971 to 1976. From 1978 to 1981, he was chief of staff to Idaho Governor John V. Evans. He then represented Idaho on the Northwest Power Planning Council, now known as the Northwest Power and Conservation Council, from 1981 to 1996. In 2002, he moved to Portland, Oregon. He died in 2016.

Leroy H. Hemmingway was born in Evanston, Illinois, in 1946. In 1968, he earned a degree from Stanford University. In 1972, he earned a law degree from Yale University. He was involved with the Oregon Environmental Council during the early 1970s, and in 1976, he worked as a lawyer for the Oregon Public Utility Commission. He served as deputy public utility commissioner under Commissioners Charlie Davis and John J. Lobdell, during both the administrations of governors Bob Straub and Vic Atiyeh. He represented Oregon on the Northwest Power Planning Council, now known as the Northwest Power and Conservation Council, from 1981 to 1986. From 1995 to 2001, he was a policy advisor to Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber. From 2001 to 2003, he served as chair of the Oregon Public Utility Commission. From 2003 to 2006, he served as New Zealand Energy Commissioner. He then returned to Portland, Oregon, and worked as an energy consultant.

In 1984, Sava Giurgiev fled to the United States, and in 1986, the family was reunited in Chicago, Illinois. In 1992, Anna Giurgiev earned a nursing degree from the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois. Gitanjali "Anju" Jacqueline Hursh, aka DJ Anjali, was born in Oregon City, Oregon, in 1973. During her childhood, her family moved frequently. She attended Portland State University. In 2000, she and her partner, Stephen Strausbaugh, formed the duo DJ Anjali and the Incredible Kid. Together, they founded the monthly ANDAZ dance party, which is the longest-running Desi dance party in the world.

A few years later, her father left to find work in the Netherlands, while the rest of the family remained in Egypt. Her family applied for refugee status in the United States, and in 2010 they were relocated to Oregon. They lived in Portland and Salem before settling in Hillsboro. Ibrahim attended Portland Community College, and in 2021, she earned a bachelor's degree from Portland State University.
