Teiser, Sidney, 1882-

Sidney Teiser was born in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1882. After his parents died, he was raised by relatives in Norfolk, Virginia. In 1903, he earned a law degree from the University of Virginia. In 1911, he moved to Portland, Oregon, and practiced law until his retirement in 1972. He served on the board of governors of the American Bar Association. He invented the Magna Q Viewer, a reading aid for people with visual impairments, and developed the Microlex system of legal research. He served as the first president of the Jewish Historical Society of Oregon. He wrote several books on legal and judicial history. Teiser married twice and had two children. He died in 1982.

Giffin, Harvey S. (Harvey Sheldon), 1922-1988

Harvey Sheldon Giffin was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1922. The next year, he moved with his family to Vancouver, Washington. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. In 1942, he and Emily Mae Barnes were married; they later had two children. After he was discharged from the Army in 1946, he began acting with the Portland Civic Theatre in Portland, Oregon. He died in 1988.

Brewster, William L., Jr. (William Lewis), 1905-1993

William Lewis Brewster, Jr. was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1905. He attended the Thacher School, Reed College, Princeton University, and the Harvard Business School. In 1931, he and Frances Nan Montgomery were married; they later had two children. He worked in property management and real estate sales for 50 years, retiring in 1978. He served as president of the Oregon Mental Health Association, the Urban League of Portland, the Council of Social Agencies, the Portland Art Commission, Catlin Gabel School, and the Portland Association of Building Owners and Managers. He died in 1993.

Gerlinger, Beatrice L. (Beatrice Lee), 1897-1984

Beatrice Lee Gerlinger, nee Beatrice Elizabeth Lee, was born in Seattle, Washington, in 1897. She came to Portland, Oregon, in 1923. In 1931, she and Louis Gerlinger, Jr., were married. She died in 1984.

Heitkemper, Francis J. (Francis James), 1910-1988

Francis James Heitkemper was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1910. In 1928, he and Jane Cullers were married; they later had three children. He was a jeweler and owner of his family's business, the Heitkemper Jewelry Store in Portland. He died in 1988.

Clarke, Gibby S. (Virginia Steward), 1921-2011

Virginia "Gibby" Steward Clarke, nee Gibson, was born in Fort Omaha, Nebraska, in 1921. She moved to Portland, Oregon, in the late 1930s, and joined the Oregon Women's Ambulance Corps. During World War II, she joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. She became a second lieutenant and continued to serve in the U.S. Army until 1952. In 1955, she earned a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Oregon. That same year, she and William Gentry Clarke were married; they later had three children. The family lived in Kern County, California. In 1968, she earned a master's of library and information science from San Jose State University, and later ran a public library in Kern County, California. The family returned to Oregon in 1970. She died in 2011.

Burnham family

In 1908, Allison Burnham (approximately 1866-1939) became the first postmaster in the unincorporated lumbering community of Mountain in Josephine County, Oregon. Mountain was located just southeast of Sexton Mountain and a few miles north of Grants Pass, at or near the location of the Lucky Queen Mine. The post office in Mountain was closed and consolidated to Threepines in 1913. Allison Burnham and his wife, Ella Whipple Burnham (1868-1927), had two children Howard J. Burnham (1901-1985) and Myrtle C. Burnham (1902-1992). By 1910, the Burnham family moved to Vancouver, Washington. Allison Burnham started Clark County Title and Abstract Company in Vancouver in the early twentieth century. His son, Howard J. Burnham, owned and operated the company from 1926 to 1968.

Galton, Sidney

Sidney A. Galton (1947- ) was one of the early members of the Portland Gay Mens' Chorus. Galton worked as a lawyer and a judge after being born and raised in Portland, OR. Galton was instrumental in encouraging then governor Neil Goldschmidt to issue an executive order protecting gay and lesbian state employees from job discrimination.
