Richard "Dick" Charles Erath was born in Alameda, California, in 1935. He grew up in Oakland, California, and in 1949, his family briefly relocated to Seattle, Washington, before returning to Oakland in 1951. After high school, he attended Oakland Junior College and joined the U.S. Naval Reserve, where he went through the Navy electronic technician training program. He then attended the University of California at Berkeley, but did not complete a degree. In 1961, he and Tina J. Butler were married; they later had two children. In 1965, he made his first barrel of wine in his backyard while living in Walnut Creek, California. He studied enology, the science of winemaking, at the University of California at Davis. In 1969, he planted his first grapes in in the Willamette Valley at Erath Winery in Dundee, Oregon. He focused on Pinot noir. He sold his winery, which still bears his name, in 2006.

Earl Wilcox Snell was born in Olex, Oregon, on July 11, 1895, and completed his education at the Oregon Institute of Technology in Portland. He served in World War I and entered state politics as a Republican in 1927. After tenures as speaker of the Oregon House and as Oregon secretary of state between 1933 and 1942, Snell was elected governor. He died in an airplane crash on October 29, 1947, during his second term.

Louis DeMott Bunce (1907-1983) was born in Lander, Wyoming, and came with his family to Portland, Oregon in 1920. He was a painter and printmaker, known for his variety of styles and was considered a great artist in Oregon modernism.
