Mills, Abbot Low, 1898-1986

Abbot Low Mills, Jr., was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1898. In 1921, he earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard University. The next year, he began working as a messenger for the First National Bank of Portland, where his father was president. In 1924, he and Katherine Ainsworth were married; they later had four children. In 1933, he became assistant president, and later vice president, of the United States National Bank of Portland, which later became U.S. National Bank of Oregon. In 1952, President Harry S. Truman appointed him to the board of governors of the Federal Reserve System. He served on the board until 1968, then returned to Oregon. He died in 1986.

Armentrout, Jane Myers

Jane Myers Armentrout, nee Jane Agnes Myers, was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1916. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon, and later earned a master's degree in biochemistry. She was a bacteriology lab technician for the Oregon State Board of Health, taught biology and English at St. Helen's Hall, and was a hematology research assistant at the University of Oregon Medical School. In 1940, she and Herbert Leppen Armentrout were married; they later had three children. In the 1950s, she organized a campaign for polio shots through the Wilson High School Parent Teacher Association. She died in 1999.

Clark, Margaret S. (Margaret Savier), 1895-1994

Margaret Savier Clark, nee Mears, was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1895. In 1917, she and Norman Nienstedt Rupp were married; they later had three children. Rupp died in 1942, and she remarried to Wilson Warner Clark in 1949. She died in 1994.

Martin, Samuel H. (Samuel Holly), 1904-1978

Samuel Holly Martin was born in the Philippines in 1904 to Louise Martin and Charles H. Martin, who was an officer in the U.S. Army, and later an Oregon congressman and Oregon governor. During Samuel H. Martin's early life, his father's military career meant frequent moves for the family. When Charles H. Martin became commander of the Oregon National Guard, they moved to Vancouver, Washington. Samuel H. Martin attended college in Oregon, then earned a law degree from Harvard University. After graduating, he practiced law in Portland, Oregon. In 1937, he and Ellen Jean Bowman were married; they later had four children. He died in 1978.

Failing, Henrietta Chase, 1895-1989

Henrietta Chase Failing was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1895. In 1914, she graduated from the Portland Academy. She later attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, and Reed College in Portland. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Portland, a board member for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and was a volunteer for the Red Cross. She died in 1989.

Berry, Ellen B. (Ellen Bowman), 1888-1980

Ellen Bowman Berry, nee Ellen E. Bates, was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1888. She later worked as a music teacher in Grand Rapids. In 1913, she and John Linden Bowman were married. They moved to Portland, Oregon, and later had two children. After John Linden Bowman died in 1928, Ellen Bowman became the manager of his clothing business. In 1936, she remarried, to Frank J. Berry. The Berrys lived in Seattle, Washington, and St. Paul, Minnesota, before returning to Portland in 1956. Ellen B. Berry died in 1980.

Cabell, Margaret M. (Margaret Malarkey), 1894-1985

Margaret Malarkey Cabell, nee Margaret Malarkey, was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1894. In 1914, she and Vernon Alexander Cartwright were married; they later had two children, then divorced in 1928. In 1931, she remarried to Henry Failing Cabell. She was a charter member of the Portland Garden Club, and later served as secretary and president of the club's board. She also served as director of the board of the Garden Club of America, and was involved in the founding of Portland's Japanese Garden, as well as a Portland chapter of the Bonsai Society. She was a member of the Junior League and a charter member of the Town Club. She died in 1985.
