Lawrence Leighton Smith was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1936. He studied math at Oregon State University, then transferred to Portland State University to study music, earning his bachelor's degree in 1956. He then briefly continued to study graduate-level mathematics at New York University, but dropped out to focus on music. In 1959, he earned a music degree from Mannes College of Music. He later earned a doctorate in music from the University of Louisville in 1992. He studied music under Ariel Rubstein in Oregon and Leonard Shure in New York. He was a pianist and conductor for many symphonies around the country, including the Metropolitan Opera from 1964 to 1967 and the Oregon Symphony from 1973 to 1980. He died in 2013.

Karen Beck Skold, nee Karen Leona Beck, was born in 1948. In 1970, she earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Oberlin College. That same year, she and Carl N. Skold were married. In 1981, she earned a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Oregon. She taught at the University of Oregon, San Diego State University, and San Jose State University, and was affiliated with the Institute for Research on Women and Gender Studies at Stanford University. She also worked to implement the child care policy for the city of Sunnyvale, California.

Wood, Erskine

Erskine B. Wood was born in the Vancouver Barracks in Vancouver, Washington, in 1879. He was the son of Portland, Oregon, lawyer Charles Erskine Scott Wood, whose biography he authored. In 1901, he earned a law degree from Harvard University. In 1903, he and Rebecca Baird Biddle were married; they later had four children. He joined his father's law firm in Portland and specialized in admiralty law. He also served as admiralty counsel to the United States Shipping Board in 1920. Rebecca Baird Biddle died in 1951. In 1953, Wood and Louise Pippel Cunningham were married. He retired from his law practice in 1982, and died in 1983 at the age of 104.

Luce, Charles F. (Charles Franklin), 1917-2008

Charles Franklin Luce was born in Platteville, Wisconsin, in 1917. In 1941, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin. In 1942, he graduated from Yale law school and went on to clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black. In 1942, he and Helen Oden were married; they later had four children. In 1944, he took a job with the Bonneville Power Administration and in 1961, he was named by President John F. Kennedy as Bonneville Power Administrator. He briefly served as undersecretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1966. From 1967 to 1982, he served as chair and chief executive of Consolidated Edison in New York. Helen Luce died in 2001, and he later married Margaret Richmond. He died in 2008.

Diarmuid Fionntain O'Scannlain was born in New York, New York, in 1937. In 1957, he earned a bachelor's degree from St. John's University. In 1963, he earned a juris doctorate from Harvard Law School. That same year, he and Maura Nolan were married; they later had eight children. From 1955 to 1978, he served in the U.S. Army Reserve. After passing the New York Bar in 1964, he worked as a tax lawyer for Standard Oil, and in 1965 he came to Portland, Oregon, to join the law firm now known as Stoel Rives. In 1969, he became deputy attorney general for Oregon, and in 1971, he became Oregon public utility commissioner. From 1973 to 1974, he was head of the Department of Environmental Quality, and in 1974, he ran unsuccessfully for the First Congressional District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. He then returned to private practice. He was on President Ronald Reagan's transition team, and served as Oregon Republican Party chair from 1983 to 1986. He also served on the Northwest Power Planning Council, which is now known as the Northwest Power and Conservation Council. He served as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 1986 to 2016, when he took senior status. In 1992, he also earned a master of law degree from the University of Virginia.

Joel Redon was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1961. He studied writing at New York University and with Paul Bowles at the American School of Tangiers in Morocco. He was diagnosed with AIDS in 1986. He authored several novels, including the semi-autobiographical novel, "Bloodstream." He died in 1995.
